Nova Scotia Environmental News

  • N.S. and N.B. shatter temperature records, crews respond to fires and broken pipes

Nova Scotia and New Brunswick broke several low-temperature records this month, as an extreme cold snap swept through the region.

According to Environment Canada, New Brunswick saw wind chill ranges between -40 and -50, while Nova Scotia recorded wind chills between -35 and -45.

  • Coping with extreme weather calls for new thinking, climate researcher says

A researcher from Nova Scotia says the province can learn lessons from past hurricanes to minimize the widespread disruption of transportation caused by extreme weather.

Stephanie Sodero is a lecturer in climate crises at the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute at the University of Manchester in the U.K.  She has written a new book called Under the Weather that urges an environmental approach to weather resiliency.

  • N.S. researcher spots first recorded case of an orca caring for another species' baby

A Halifax-based biologist who helped to document the first recorded case of an orca caring for the offspring of another species says the finding sheds light on a complex animal relationship.

Elizabeth Zwamborn, a researcher at Dalhousie University, is part of a research group that spotted a female orca _ or killer whale _ caring for a newborn long-finned pilot whale calf off Iceland when there were no other pilot whales nearby.

  • Tracing fishing gear to protect North Atlantic right whales is positive step: experts

Much can be learned about the evolving habits of endangered North Atlantic right whales by tracing pieces of fishing gear from which the animals are freed, say researchers.

Gear that was disentangled from a whale in United States waters in January was traced back to the southern coast of Nova Scotia, Canada’s Fisheries Department said in a recent news release.

“This is the first North Atlantic right whale entanglement confirmed to be connected to Canada’s lobster fishery in over five years,” the department said.

  • N.S. pulls ahead in Atlantic Canadian race to supply Germany with green energy

The Nova Scotia government has approved the first phase of a green hydrogen and ammonia operation led by EverWind Fuels in Cape Breton.

The first phase includes the construction of a 300-megawatt hydrogen electrolysis plant and an ammonia production facility in the community of Port Hawkesbury, N.S.

  • Second green hydrogen project proposed for Point Tupper

A second green hydrogen production plant is being considered for Point Tupper, N.S., and a local resident is expressing concerns about the scale of the developments.

The province approved a proposal by EverWind Fuels last month, and now another has been filed by Bear Head Energy, a company that had previously proposed a liquefied natural gas project for the area.

Both projects propose taking water from nearby Landrie Lake and splitting it into oxygen and hydrogen, and then using the hydrogen to replace fossil fuels or converting it into ammonium fertilizer.

Please write to help protect Sandy Lake Regional Park.

"The Province’s Housing Task Force's mandate is focused on their singular focus of expediting development projects. However, sacrificing an outstanding ecosystem like Sandy Lake Regional
Park to solve the housing crisis is not reasonable and not necessary. There are better places to put housing.

The Sandy Lake-Sackville River’s Coalition Steering Committee has sent detailed information on the values of the area to every single MLA (there are 55 of them!) with the request to remove Sandy Lake from the Special Planning Area list.

We ask that you write to your MLA, Housing Minister John Lohr, and the Premier, plus your city councillor and Mayor Savage, and request that the Sandy Lake area be removed from the Provincial Housing Task Force's Special Planning Area list. Request that they expand the park to 2,800 acres to service citizens needs, to support the wildlife that already calls the area home, and address Climate Change and Biodiversity losses.

To write to the Province:
Premier Tim Houston: PREMIER@novascotia.ca
Minister John Lohr, Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs:
DMAMIN@novascotia.ca
