Environmental Policy
7:00 - 9:00 PM ADT October 5, 2021 (online via Zoom)
People are becoming increasingly aware of the need to shape environmental policies that will ensure a sustainable future. This session will feature three panelists from the worlds of politics, advocacy, and environmental law, who will shed light on policy-making procedures and how citizens can get more involved.

Lisa Roberts Lisa Roberts became MLA in Halifax Needham from 2016 until 2021. She was the NDP candidate for Halifax in the federal election that concluded Sept. 20. 2021 During her time in the provincial legislature, Lisa was a prominent voice on housing, climate change and forestry as part of the NDP caucus. Lisa loves building community. Before running for office, she was Executive Director at Veith House, a non-profit neighbourhood organization. She was a founding board member of the North End Opportunity Fund, and has also volunteered with the Bayers Westwood Family Resource Centre and the IWK Health Centre. She's a long-time member of the Ecology Action Centre. Prior to dedicating herself to community work, Lisa was a journalist, working primarily with CBC Radio. Lisa also wrote as a freelance journalist and was a writing tutor at the University of King’s College. Lisa has an undergraduate degree in International Development Studies and a Masters in Development Economics, both from Dalhousie University. |

Tina Northrup Tina is a staff lawyer at East Coast Environmental Law: a regional environmental law charity that provides public-interest environmental law services throughout Atlantic Canada. She is a settler living and working in Mi'kma'ki, and her special interests include Aboriginal and Indigenous laws, climate change mitigation and adaptation, human rights in environmental contexts, and rights of nature. |

Karen McKendry Karen spent her childhood exploring the woods and waters of Ontario and Quebec. Her passion for the environment, paired with a lot of hard work, has earned her a BSc. in Ecology, and Masters of Environmental Studies. Since moving to Nova Scotia in 2005, Karen has worked as a conservation planner and biologist, and environmental advocate. She has worked to influence environmental law and policy at the provincial level, with mixed results! |
